Writing Your Representative Project

We’ve been learning about democracy all year long. We’ve learned that the word itself originated in ancient Greece. We also learned the difference between indirect and direct democracy. We have studied the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. We have also discovered the power of ideas and that the actions of one person can make a difference to our country and the world.

As citizens of America, it is our right to ask the people who represent us in our government to answer our questions and concerns. Because we have a democratic form of government and a bicameral system our Senators and Congressman are just a phone call, email, letter or fax away. We are their constituents and they enjoy hearing from their fellow Americans.

Now that you know the name and address of your  President, Congressman, Senator and Mayor, write them a letter. In your letter include the following information:

  • Your name, grade and class
  • The name of our school
  • Explain that your class has been learning about democracy in ancient times and today
  • Explain that you had to find out their name and the work they do for their constituents
  • Explain that you have a concern about an issue and ask what they are doing about this problem
  • Invite them to our class
  • End by stating that you look forward to hearing from them in the future
  • Thank them for their attention to your letter.

The technology and writing skills utilized in this project are also  in synch with the NYSED ELA and Social Studies Standards.
