In January we began learning about how the actions of one man changed the lives of millions of Americans. My sixth graders were not born during the lifetime of Martin Luther King. Whatever information they have learned about his life has been secondhand or even further removed.

My objective in promoting this "One  Man Can Make a Difference " theme was to make children think of the gifts and capabilities we all have as human beings.  We saw a video presentation on the life of Dr. King with extensive file footage of the actual events as they happened during the 1950s and 60's.

Additionally, in our curriculum on Ancient Greece ,Socrates once said, "the unexamined life is not worth living".  I wanted my students to begin to think about Dr. King's life and purpose. I wanted them to examine and question their purpose in life. It's never too early to  encourage children to think of others, themselves and their ultimate place in the world. Everyone has a purpose and value.
