Abstract:
|
The Project SNARK Consortium is utilizing an integrated services, six-strategy approach to provide services for high-risk middle school youth in five ethnically and economically diverse communities. Over 1,800 students will participate in BOOSTER CLUB (academic tutoring after school and on the weekends); THE PLACE (Friday/Saturday educational and recreational experiences); PAKT (Parents of high- risk youth and their children expanding their school involvement, communication, and horizons through educational trips and experiences); JOG (high-risk middle school youth will teach senior citizens how to use the computer and the seniors will share oral histories with the students - together, they will publish the histories); JUMP START (students transitioning from elementary school to middle school and students transitioning from middle school to high school will have a summer educational/recreational experience to help them adjust to their new setting); and COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP (students who have grown through the year, and subsequently students and families will have their leadership skills sharpened in a Summer Leadership retreat).
Each center has its own steering committee with representation by building administration, teachers, pupil personnel staff, community agency staff, parents, and students. These committees provide community input, publicity, and general support for each project. Meetings take place across the consortium with superintendents, coordinators/staff developers, activity leaders, and community-based agencies. A newspaper is being published for the grant which shares activities and strategies with all the partners. Formal databases have been set up to facilitate the management information system.
