Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art

On January 7,2000 Mrs. Gatling's class and Mr. Sarlo's class took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City.  We had planned to go to the temporary and permanent exhibits on Ancient Egyptian culture, life, death and arts.

We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art because we were studying Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece at the time. Mrs. Gatling thought this would be perfect and that it would help us understand what we were learning.

Many people from each class took an interactive audio tour of the special Egyptian exhibit, hosted by Phillip de Montebello, the curator of the museum.  Phillip took you through the entire exhibit including almost every artifact and picture.

The permanent exhibits let us view many statues including Hatshepsut, the first female pharaoh, a tomb of a very important servant to the pharaoh named Waa and the important artifacts that came with him into his afterlife.

We also saw the temple of Dendur which was built in honor of Isis, the wife of Osiris, the god of the underworld.  The temple of Dendur was particularly amazing with its ancient graffiti dating back to the 1700s.

Our tour guide, Diana Smith was very nice. She helped us out a lot. She showed us not just Greece and Egypt, But also India, China, and more.

Besides Ancient Egypt we also saw exhibits that showed artifacts of Ancient Greece and India.  In these exhibits we saw many artifacts, pottery and statues explaining these countries.

I think by seeing these wonderful exhibits we really got to know more about the Ancient time period and it was a fun filled learning experience.
