Memorial Day is a very important day of the year. Many people have to study about Memorial Day if they are studying American History. On this holiday, we remember many people and celebrate in many ways, in which you will soon find out. In this essay I will tell why this holiday is so important.

The purpose of Memorial Day is for the remembrance of our ancestors, family members, loved ones, neighbors, friends, and the brave soldiers who have done their best to protect our country, America, in wars.

This holiday began with the name Decoration Day. About two-dozen cities and towns say that they are the birthplace of Memorial Day. Even though it was declared that Waterloo, NY was the birthplace by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, no one still has really figured out it’s birthplace. It is said that Memorial Day had many separate origins.

Soldiers that have lost their lives protecting America in wars have probably given me this great life today. If they had lost in the wars, I might not have even been born in America. There would have probably been a new country that would have made a law that my parents could not come to this country. Then, I might have been born somewhere else.

Another way they have impacted my life is by giving this country a great name and a great history. If they lost wars, we would have been known as a weak country; a country that can’t win a war. Then, more people would try to start wars to take control of our country. Then, everyone would have a bomb shelter and would constantly be scared.

Seeing the Tomb of the Unknowns helped me learn how important the soldiers were. They fought for us, died for us, even killed for us. The tomb visit broadened my view of life and my view of our American heroes. Now I know the kinds of things they have done for us.

It is definitely important to remember our fallen heroes. Like I said they did a lot for us and I respect them so much, it is unbelievable. I also think that these soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. That sacrifice is death as Jesus did in the Christian religion.

Reading the history of this holiday reminds me of the real meaning of this day because it tells everything you really must know about what happened to cause this day. Many people have lost their lives. Many families lost their family members, but there is no one that I know in my family that has died in an American war.
