Halloween!  By Ashley

Halloween is a holiday. Many children and people

celebrate it. Halloween means the day of the dead.

This holiday is celebrated on October 31 in most areas

of North America and Western Europe. All Saints Day is like Halloween in the 10th century. This was celebrated on November 7.

The old symbol for Halloween is the jack-o-lantern. They used it because of a British folktale that a soul was barred from heaven and hell so he was forced to walk around the earth with just his lantern.

Halloween got started when the ancient people of Europe marked the end of the harvest season. They called this day Samhain or formally known as Halloween.

A lot of people celebrate Halloween but they just have a different name. The catholic people also celebrate Halloween but they call it All Souls Day. In California, Louisiana, and Florida they celebrate Halloween. They also celebrate it on October 31st. Some of the customs that are practiced on Halloween is symbolizing bad omens like bats and black cats. It also has something to do with dressing up in costumes.

Dressing up in costumes and going trick-or-treating are some of the traditions of Halloween. In the United States we celebrate Halloween by having Halloween parties, decorating your house with Halloween decorations and buying candy.

I do participate in this holiday. This year to mark the holiday I am going to go trick-or-treating and hang out with my friends. In our school we are having a Halloween dance. Also some classes might be having a party.

Reading this article about Halloween made me aware of it’s true meaning. I think that it was good that I read it because now I know about all of the states that celebrate Halloween. I also think it was good because now I know what kids do to people’s houses and how much fun you can have!
