December-January 2002- Quarters 2and 3

This year in the sixth grade we’ve been learning about the countries and culture  of the Eastern Hemisphere. As part of our curriculum at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, we host an annual World’s Fair for our school, parents and community.

This year our event will be held on March 13, 2002. We begin the preparation of our event by learning about the countries we will be representing in the fair. All sixth grade students will be the ambassadors of their countries and will have a lot of knowledge and interesting bits of information to share with visitors to the fair.

Our first task is to write to the foreign embassies of our selected country. Most of the countries in the World’s Fair have embassies in Washington D.C.   Now that you have the name and address of your embassy, write them a letter. In your letter be sure and include the following information:

  • The proper business letter format
  • Your name, grade and class
  • The name of our school
  • Explain that you are working on a class project called the World’s Fair
  • Explain how you have selected their beautiful country to report on for the fair.
  • Request information be sent to you on their government, education, language, music, food etc.
  • Tell them you need this information as soon as possible
  • Thank them for their help

The technology and writing skills utilized in this project are also  in synch with the NYSED ELA and Social Studies Standards.
