Overview:

Black History Project

As you know, this month we’re studying the achievements and contributions of African Americans.  Dr. Carter G. Woodson, scholar and historian, started this celebration many years ago. Dr. Woodson selected the month of February for this celebration because the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and the abolitionist and former slave, Frederick Douglass occurred in this month.

All students will be required to report on one famous African American and present their report to the class. Your project can take several forms. Everyone must complete number 1 and select one other project to complete:

1.      Develop a PowerPoint Presentation on your famous African American. The presentation must be a minimum of 10 slides.

2.    Make a diorama of your famous African American. This project can depict an event in the life of a person. It must be colorful and include a description of the person and their achievements. If possible, bring in videotape resources about your person.

3.    Make a Black History Calendar, Stamp or Poster of your person. Illustrate the important events in their life. Be sure and include a description of the person, pictures and their achievements.

4.    Come dressed as your famous African American. Be prepared to report orally on the person you are portraying. Be sure and include a written description and picture of your person to be turned in at the end of your act.

5.    Be prepared to be interviewed on camera about your famous African American. You will have to explain the important contributions of this person, describe what form your project took  and what you have learned about Black History Month.

6.    All projects can be accompanied by additional materials. Large posters, videos, audio cassettes or your own musical abilities can be included in your project. This project counts as a test grade.

All projects are due on Wednesday, February 27, 2002.
