September 2002
On September 27, 2002 my class went to the the Amityville Beach. We went to the beach to see and understand sea life. I have been to the Amityville Beach many times for summer activities. Mr. Pollock had the keys to the beach because he works there. Mr. Pollock is a math teacher in our school. Mr. Pollock is a life guard at the beach and he is also a teacher at the beach. I had expected to see snappers, and killies at the beach. My expectations were realized and I saw a lot more then I thought I would see. You could bring back fish for either your home or your class. If you caught a fish and did not want to keep it you could put it the back in the ocean. I enjoyed trying to catch fish and crabs at the beach and on the docks. I had not experienced seining at the beach. Mr. Pollock told me about the horseshoe crab. If you step on its tail your foot would have been in great pain. He also said that the crab’s shell was very hard. The characteristics of a blow fish is that it is flat. When it gets scared, it puffs up . Another name for the blow fish is called the puffer fish. The fish nets are used by laying them on the bottom of the water and moving around a bit. The metal cages are used to catch crabs. When the cage hits the ground, the sides come out. The metal cage is called a crab cage. What I saw in the ocean that I learned in class was that that the fish would eat the plants, then the small fish would be eaten by a bigger fish. The term “webs of life” means the animals that eat one another make up a chart or a web. I think a trip is better then just staying in a class and not doing anything fun. The best thing about this trip was I got to see a blowfish and I was able to throw a chicken leg in the water. I do not think there were any bad things about the trip. I learned that there was blowfish in the bay. The water was salt water that we were in. I do think that kids in the future should go on this trip. |
